I'm a pretty frugal person, both by nature and circumstance. I have simple taste, am not impressed at all by name brands or fancy things, and don't like to pay more for something that has bells and whistles if the plain version will suffice. There have also been many years where, despite preferring and choosing a simple lifestyle, money was super tight. Between the need for frugality during some seasons of life and the fact I'm wired to be frugal in the first place, I can really stretch a dollar.
The key in the front of this picture is the result of me choosing frivolity over frugality a couple months ago. I headed down to the hardware store to replace a key and fully intended to get an ordinary silver one. The employee mentioned the fun ones were on sale, but I told him I'd still like a regular one. Then I saw this key in the mix of ones with flowers, sports teams, foods, and other designs. I impulsively changed my mind, pulled it off the rack, and spent a little extra (the sale price was still more than a regular key) to have him cut it for me.
If bright colors and flip flops don't scream "Bethany", then I don't know what does. I love it, absolutely love it, and smile every single time I use it. I realize the extra buck or so that I spent isn't a big deal from a monetary standpoint, but buying the frivolous key was a little stretch of my comfort zone and it's serving as a constant reminder for me to enjoy life, not just live it.
