BOOKS I FINISHED - OCTOBER 2022

The Book Woman's Daughter, written by Kim Michelle Richardson

The sequel to The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, which I read two years ago, this book is about a teenager whose parents are incarcerated because of the racism that forbid them from being married and her subsequent fight for independence and safety. Treated poorly because she's female and has blue skin, Honey Lovett is still determined to move forward in her own life while also serving those around her. It's a fictional story based on the very real problems of racism, misogyny, poverty, as well as the gifts of family, literacy, friendship, kindness, and integrity.

p. 193, "A man can't be both smart and hungry at the same time. Now's the time to be smart."

My belly growled, and I knew he was right. Mama used to say something similar when one of my handmade toys would break and I'd get frustrated, shake it or throw it onto the ground. She'd always said, Can't be angry and smart at the same time. Now, nothing wrong in having the anger, but the two rarely work together. Let's be smart, darling daughter. And then she'd calmly, and ever so slow, help me repair the busted toy.

Some things never become less appalling to read or hear about, like human beings who are ignored in cribs for years on end, considered worthless because they don't measure up to some arbitrary standard of what's acceptable, or profiting financially from the physical abuse of others. In the case of Lahutsky, the horrific neglect he experienced for many years of his childhood finally came to an end because a small group of people never stopped advocating for him.

The Kite Fighters, written by Linda Sue Park

An older brother who's really good at building kites. A younger brother who's really good at flying kites. A culture that requires the older be the one to compete in a New Year Festival kite fight. A young king who wants friendship and a part in the kite fighting competition. This fictional story about family, friendship, appreciating people's strengths, showing respect for the positions people hold, and having integrity in all you do is a school book I read to Tyler and he really enjoyed.

This true story is one of investing time in teaching others what we know, working hard to accomplish something when success is unlikely, and what it means to be an American. It's about race, poverty, immigration, and education. It's heart-breaking, inspiring, and thought-provoking.

Storm Runners: Wind, Storm Runners: The Surge, and Storm Runners: Eruption, written by Roland Smith and narrated by Ramon de Ocampo

This middle grade series about a boy and his dad who follow natural disasters, helping people prep beforehand and hiring themselves out for repairs after the fact, was perfect for listening to on a long road trip. I checked the first one out on Libby, just to see if we liked it, and Tyler asked as soon as it finished if I could check out the next one. And the next. With a hurricane, flooding, earthquake, volcano, someone being struck by lightning, vehicle crashes, circus animals on the loose, and more, there's no shortage of adventure. While the storylines and characters do overlap, each book can also stand on its own.

PUZZLES I FINISHED - OCTOBER 2022

Cartoon World: Sam's Garage - Artist: Hiro Tanikawa - Buffalo Games - 1,000 pieces (missing 4)

There are so many little things in this colorful puzzle!

Wizard of Oz - Artist: Eric Dowdle - Dowdle Folk Art - 1,000 pieces

I started this one, but Tyler ended up doing most of it over a few days while I napped. I'd normally be immaturely annoyed about missing out because I love working on Dowdles, but we'd done this one before and he was having fun with it.

HALLOWEEN - 2022

Naomi, Tyler, and I headed to Lee Farms for our church's Hootenanny on Thursday. We had to get proof we were all there before we went our separate ways.

We met up with some of Natie's family and I found this crew jumping together at one point.

Naomi stayed busy volunteering at one of the activity stations. That blue tongue of hers makes me think she did some quality control on the candy she was giving out.

It's such a blessing to be friends with the mom of the person your kid marries. Alicia and I haven't hung out in quite a while, so it was fantastic to have some time to visit.

These two were so happy to see each other! Once upon a time, quite a while ago, Flo used to hold Naomi in the nursery at church. Those days are long gone, but now that former baby got to hook the former nursery worker up with some candy.

Some friends came over for pumpkin carving on Friday evening. You could tell they were concentrating on the task because this normally chatty group was really quiet for a while. Snacks, jack-o-lanterns, laughter, and moms chatting in another room made for a fun time.

Woodburn had their second annual trunk or treat downtown. We didn't go last year, but I asked Tyler if he was interested this time around. He was. It was quick, fun, and he came home with candy. Bonus points for seeing friends arriving about the same time we did. The boys tried to take a picture together, which was comical because they couldn't get their arms around each other.

Three consecutive days of Halloween fun, but we'll probably lay low on the actual holiday.

THANKFUL THURSDAY

I'm thankful someone accepted my open invitation to come over one evening last week, which led to several hours talking about all sorts of things with someone I've known casually for many years. What's one thing that you're thankful for?

THANKFUL THURSDAY

I'm thankful I made a spontaneous decision to ramp up my occasional Facebook posts of three blessings to a full week of nightly lists with several blessings. What's something that you're thankful for?

PUZZLES I FINISHED - SEPTEMBER 2022

Doodle-Dads and Boogle-Bugs - Artist: Unknown - Springbok - 500 pieces

So many fishing supplies! This puzzle is as old as I am, so Tyler finds it funny that it's labeled as vintage when sold on eBay.

Doughnuts - Artist: Unknown - Cobble Hill - 1,000 pieces

It's not every puzzle that makes you salivate, but this one is bound to make you want a doughnut.

Home Country: Oceanbay Carnival Pier - Artist: Mark Frost - Cra-Z-Art - 1,000 pieces

Lots of people enjoying the sunshine on land and sea was a fun scene to put together.

Noah's Ark - Artist: Eric Dowdle - Dowdle Folk Art - 500 pieces

Not only are there tons of animal pairs in this puzzle, but there are other fun details like single dinosaurs being held up by a stop sign, penguins serving drinks, and animals wearing accessories or playing musical instruments.

Portland City of Roses - Artist: Eric Dowdle - Dowdle Folk Art - 1,000 pieces

We've done this puzzle many times and I'm always amazed at the variety of windows in it.
