EXPRESSIVE FACE + KNIFE = HAIRCUT BY DEVON

Devon's been talking about cutting his hair for a while, but wasn't ready. Just pondering the option. It takes a really long time to get length when your hair is curly, so chopping it off is a bigger deal than it would be for someone with straight hair. But the time finally came last night. He hemmed and hawed a bit, but finally decided to just go for it.

First, some pre-cut pictures. His hair had been pulled back for a couple days and was looking a little ratty, but you can still see how long it was when he stretched it out.

He's been telling me for months that whenever he cut his hair, he'd do it with one of his knives. His new style may not be funky, but the process of getting it sure was!

An "I can't believe I chopped it" grin at the first shortened section.

His facial expressions cracked me up!

I showed him the previous picture, so here's the face he made for the next cut. Ha!

His hair kept shrinking and he enjoyed the cutting process.

Funky chopped hair.

I evened out a few ends at his request, added a little gel, then he was good to go. Haircut was finished, but not his ever-changing facial expressions.

My and my favorite fifteen year old, minus a big pile of curls.

LOTS OF HAIR, SOME HAIR, NO HAIR

Just like his older brothers, Tyler got the urge for a funky haircut in the 5-7 year old range. He'd been asking to have half of his head shaved for a while, so we finally busted out the clippers. He started last Friday looking like this.

He finished it looking like this and was happy to have it done.

It was a short-lived haircut, though, and he decided to go completely bald again on Monday.

My favorite six year old is currently hairless and toothless. I think it's cute!

SACHI & NAOMI

Sachi, who is the mom of two boys, and Naomi, who has a non-girly mom, have been talking about having some girl time together for at least a year and it finally worked out on Saturday. They sent me this picture near the start of their day, just before they went to CeramiCafe together.

Several hours later they sent me this picture. Surprise!! It's the first time I've ever seen Naomi with straight hair.

We took a couple more pictures when she got home late that night.

It's been fun to see her with a temporary change in hair texture. Such a fun day of being crafty, eating yummy food, watching movies, and doing hair stuff for Naomi!! I'm thankful Sachi gave her such a great day.

CRAZY HAT/HAIR BOWLING NIGHT - 2018

Our church's annual crazy hat/hair bowling night for grade school has been split into two events, one for younger grade school kids and another for older. I didn't get any pictures of Ws helping at the first one with younger kids several weeks ago, but here are some from the older kid event last Friday.

Devon wanted a bunch of random braids, so Tim spent the evening before the event braiding and beading his hair. This, by the way, just happened to be the same night he made dinner at the end of a crazy day. He was on a roll of earning good husband and dad points!

I snapped a few pictures before they took off the next evening. Here's Devon and his random braids. The lack of symmetry makes me twitch, but the goal was crazy hair. Mission accomplished.

Naomi knew they'd had a prize category of tallest hair in the past, so she bought some helium balloons and tied them to her hair. Her strategy failed because they eliminated that category this year, but life goes on.

Tim wore his turtle hat, just like he does every time he helps at this event. Silas met them at the event, so I didn't get him in the group picture. I don't think he did anything festive this year anyway.

MORE FUNKY HAIR

Teebs asked for his first funky haircut last year. It was just a mohawk, which I count as funky because it's not a traditional haircut, but is so common that it doesn't really seem funky to me. A couple weeks later he decided to get rid of all his hair, which is another funky, but not really, haircut. He's been growing it out ever since, but has been asking for a truly funky haircut off and on for the last couple months. I told him I was willing to do it, but we keep forgetting or he asks at inopportune times. We finally decided to get it done yesterday.

I was pretty sure I knew what he was asking for, but his wording changed a little each time he explained it. I needed to make sure I understood before the clippers got turned on, so I asked him to draw a picture. I was expecting his head with the haircut he wanted. I got this instead.

In case you didn't recognize me, I'm on the left. Evidently I've had a haircut and a growth spurt. He's the one with the funky haircut and gigantic eyes. He even included the bag the clippers go in and the black clippers, which he kept calling "the shaver". So funny!

We marked the lines and pulled hair out of the way.

Then we started shaving. His hair was pretty puffy when we took the rubber bands out, which made him crack up and ask for a picture.

His remaining hair was so long that it flopped over and covered most of the shaved area, so we trimmed it down by about half and ended up with this.

I don't know what drives the little Ws to want and come up with funky or extreme haircuts, particularly from about 5-9 years old, but they sure have fun with it!

BECAUSE, WHY NOT?

A few weeks ago there was a conversation in the junior high group at church about what Silas was going to do with his hair when he was done with the fro he's been sporting for a while. Suggestions were tossed around and a plan was made between him and one of the leaders of the class, which led to this chain of events.

Silas this morning.

Silas after I sectioned out his hair this afternoon.

Silas and Melanie in the junior high space before church this evening.

Silas when Melanie was done with him.

Beautiful Melanie, the one with a flat iron, and laughing Silas, the one with hair to straighten.

This is obviously a temporary thing, but he's having a lot of fun with it! Meanwhile, I snapped a picture of this picture, which was on the junior high bulletin board. It was taken during a photo scavenger hunt, though Silas can't remember the word his team was trying to capture with this particular shot.

Never a dull moment in the hair department around here!

BUSTIN' OUT THE CLIPPERS AGAIN

Sixteen days ago Teebs got the mohawk he'd been asking for. Today he asked to go more extreme. Perhaps he was inspired by Naomi, who was didn't have any hair for eight months, grew it back for four months of cold weather, and then got rid of it again last month.

Check out this boy of mine. He's a cutie!
