EXPERIENCING LENT

Remember the Experiencing Advent study my friend published two Christmas seasons ago? Our family has enjoyed it twice now, using it a little differently each year.

A couple weeks ago Heather published another study called Experiencing Lent. As with her Advent study, Heather has designed Experiencing Lent in such a way that there is structure to guide you and freedom to adjust things according to your family's needs or preferences over the seven weeks of the season. Each Sunday is focused on scripture. There's a passage to read, discussion guide, questions to answer, and verses to memorize (small and large, depending on the ages of your kids).

The other days include Lenten symbols (with optional activities), witnesses (with optional character sketch forms), historical aspects (with optional activities), hymns, service ideas, and dessert recipes from around the world to eat while presenting, singing, and/or discussing things you memorized earlier in the week. The study is written in a way that makes it easy for family members of all ages to participate, being neither super childish nor super academic, and is easily manageable with daily lessons taking no more than 30 minutes.

I've attended church my whole life, but never a liturgical one, and Lent wasn't even on my radar until I was well into adulthood. This study is written with Lent rookies like me in mind (although veterans can certainly use it), giving non-liturgical Christians an opportunity to spend the weeks leading up to Resurrection Sunday intentionally focusing on our desperate need for a Savior and Jesus' death and resurrection. We've used Resurrection Eggs with our kids for many years and read the Resurrection story from our Bibles, but that's about as far as we've gone in focusing on the reason for Easter celebrations. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to going through this study with the other Ws and think it's going to be time well spent.

I hope you'll get a copy of Experiencing Lent for yourself!
