A DAY WITH FRIENDS

Last Thursday our family planned on spending the day with Sonja and her family while they're in Oregon, then illness made those plans fall through. I was super disappointed, but it was beyond anyone's control and both families just had to roll with it.  However, we were able to make the next best option work today with the little Ws and I going to see her. This was the only non-Monday, non-Friday Tim's subbed this whole school year, but he was already committed to a classroom and couldn't come with us. Bummer, but I'm glad the rest of us still got to go.

We saw Sonja and her daughter a year and a half ago, but we'd never met her husband or their new son. It was great to meet Brad, snuggle Garrett, and see how much Ella has grown. I was greedy with Garrett most of the time, but still let other Ws hold him (a little) and allowed Sonja to do crucial things like feed him and put him down for a nap. I'm generous like that. Naomi would have held him the whole time if I'd have let her.

But I kept taking him back.

We took a picture of the kids pretty early on so we'd have proof that all our kids have met before we started risking afternoon meltdowns from kids in dire need of naps. I love this picture. It's not going to win any photography awards, but it's fun to see my kids with Sonja's.

Ella only agreed to pose for the picture once Silas agreed to get her from the table where she was working on a puzzle, then she stayed on his lap for a bit after the picture was done. Firstborn bonding or something.

Meanwhile, Devon was making Garrett coo and smile.

Then, right before we headed home, I got picture proof that Sonja and I saw each other.

It's been almost ten years since she moved out of Oregon and I'm hoping she'll be back at some point. Meanwhile, I'm thankful for these little visits.

Not only did we spend time with her, which was the primary purpose of the trip, but I also got to see Robin, a friend who lives in the same area (and who I also saw last time I made the trek to see Sonja). Our visit was short and I didn't think to snap a picture, but it was wonderful to give her a hug and chat with her and Michaela for a little while.

Then, after a day filled with several hours of driving, we came home in time for a dinner that Tim had prepared. Because he had sub hours today, which end before dinner, I had Devon call him when we hit the road and let him know which thing on the menu we planned on eating. He had frozen creamy white bean chicken chili warming on the stove and skillet of fresh cornbread in the oven when we walked in the door. He and I ate together while the kids got some post-road trip wiggles out, jumping and laughing together on the trampoline. Now the kids are eating and talking Tim's ear off while I start winding down for the night.

I'd say it was a pretty fantastic day!

MENU MONDAY - 5/15/17

Naomi made some waffles for breakfast one morning, but I think that's the only thing that didn't go as planned in the meal department.

NEW RECIPES FROM LAST WEEK
* lentil & feta salad - We got this simple and filling recipe from Budget Bytes: Over 100 Easy, Delicious Recipes to Slash Your Grocery Bill in Half
* cinnamon raisin scones - Devon and I made a spontaneous batch of this recipe from 100 Days of Real Food, Fast and Fabulous: The Easy and Delicious Way to Cut Out Processed Food one afternoon. Raisin haters could use dried cranberries instead of raisins. In fact, we may try it that way just for kicks, even though we like raisins.
* quinoa with cashews - This recipe from The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dairy-Free Eating makes a great vegetarian main or side dish.

COOKING IN ADVANCE (These are often spontaneous projects, so they'll include things we did at the last minute the previous week and/or plan on doing in the upcoming one.)
* peanut butter in the food processor and a seasoned mix black and pinto beans in the crockpot, just like we do once or twice every week

BREAKFAST
* oatmeal with a rotation of the following toppings - brown sugar, cinnamon, milk, homemade peanut butter, maple almond butter, raisins, dried cranberries, fresh or frozen fruit, huh-koe-pee milk, and/or energy mix x4
* doughnuts at church
* egg & veggie scramble
* coconut scones / smoothies

DINNER
* leftovers (every Sunday so that we can have a day off from cooking)
* six layer casserole / balsamic roasted brussels sprouts
* new recipe / apple & cranberry green salad
* Jen's chicken (crockpot) / brown rice / frozen corn
* burgers / grapes / pea pods
* caprese chicken / simmered Italian rice / roasted broccoli
* creamy white bean chicken chili (from the freezer) / cornbread

SNACKS & DESSERTS
* fruits and vegetables

* peanuts and dry roasted almonds
* popcorn with nutritional yeast, regular salt, or seasoned salt (kernels from the WinCo bulk department that get popped in my Lodge Dutch oven, but you can see my thoughts on both the wonderful Dutch oven and the fantastic West Bend Stir Crazy in this post.)

* Tillamook ice cream (salted butterscotch and strawberry lemonade, for those who care)

Note: Any chicken breasts, 93/7 ground beef, applewood smoked ham, or pork tenderloins in our menus are from Zaycon Fresh. We've been making bulk purchases from them for few years and have been pleased with their products.

MOTHER'S DAY - 2017

The little Ws. The people who call me "Mom". The cause of much laughter and many tears. The kids who can irritate me greatly and make me phenomenally proud. I'm thankful to be their mom, both in the exciting or rewarding moments and the heart-breaking or mentally-draining ones.

THANKFUL THURSDAY

With only 3 1/2 hours left in the day, I just realized I never did my usual Thankful Thursday post this morning. Our family had eagerly anticipated plans today that we'd rearranged schedules and ran errands for, but, for reasons beyond anyone's control, had to be canceled last night. I was still really disappointed this morning and expressing gratitude for anything didn't cross my mind. Oops. Probably would have helped my disposition!
Anyway, plans may get rescheduled (I'll post about it if they do) and life goes on either way. So I'll end the day with thankfulness. And I'll name more than one thing to make up for my delinquency.
* being treated to Beauty & the Beast by Naomi a couple days ago
* Samoas from Tim
* sunny days in the mid-70s followed by rainy days in the mid-50s
* hearing all the little Ws laughing and playing together this morning
* libraries
* the way Facebook is used for rallying the troops to help friends in need
* small world moments
* Skype for communicating with a sister on another continent
* watching Devon's gentleness toward our stray cat
* quiet Thursday nights
What is something you're thankful for?

WOODBURN'S 2017 AMAZING KIDS

Pamplin Media Group's Amazing Kids is an opportunity for people to nominate kids they believe deserve recognition for making a difference in their community, particularly through volunteering and community service. Each PMG newspaper selects one winner from the geographic area they serve and all those kids attend a formal event in Portland. This year's event was on Monday, but the Woodburn Independent hosted a smaller event last night for all the nominees in their area.

Although Silas didn't win the Woodburn Amazing Kid award, he was honored at a reception last night for all the local nominees. Each nominee was allowed to bring two family members and Tim was able to leave work early in order to attend, so Devon snapped a picture of the three of us as we headed out.

Allen Herriges, publisher of the Woodburn Independent, and Elias Villegas, Dean of Chemeketa Community College's Woodburn Center, each spoke to the audience, then handed out certificates and gifts to the nominees as Lindsay Keefer and Phil Hawkins, Independent editor and sports writer respectively, read information about each nominee.

The following quote is from the Independent and was part of what was said about Silas when he was recognized.

"We cannot say enough about this young man," the nomination said. "His determination and personal drive are going to serve him well. His love of knowledge, physical fitness, and adventure are key stepping stones to achieving his quest of becoming an exemplary firefighter."

Of course, we also got a picture of Silas with Lieutenant Robb Gramzow, the man who took a chance on Silas by letting him start spending time at the station several months ago and who nominated him as an Amazing Kid.

He has loved every aspect of his time at the station and is really grateful for the way he's been included in what they do, so being nominated by his lieutenant was quite an honor.

A DIFFERENCE IN DOODLES

Sometimes I doodle on the top of the page while I'm taking notes during church. The doodles vary, but they're usually just a simple pattern.

Or maybe a repeating design.

If I get really fancy, then I'll have multiple patterns and designs in one doodle.

My sister, however, is far more artistic than me. A few weeks ago Beep sent me this at the end of our Skyble study, saying it's what she doodled during our conversation.

That's our piano playing mom and guitar strumming dad, as well as a nod to our faith (the open Bible) and coastal hometown (waves). I love that she created this fun, whimsical picture while concentrating on other tasks. As for me, I'll probably draw a line of triangles in alternating directions or something equally impressive the next time we chat.

NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST AND BACK AGAIN

Tim went to Florida a few weeks ago to help with the process of getting his grandma moved into a nursing home. We didn't talk much because he was busy, but he kept in touch by sending us a few pictures while he was gone. The kids used the pictures for tracking his progress on a map.

Florida, from the air. A vantage point the kids had requested a picture from.

Florida, on the ground. This was taken a few hours after his arrival. He and a sister were T-boned in the vehicle they were supposed to drive back to Oregon. No serious injuries, thankfully, and they drove a rental car home.

He was in Florida for about 36 hours before they started their non-stop drive back to Oregon.

Georgia. Sign, then food with Daniel and Monica.

Arkansas. No sign, but there was an aunt the road trip siblings hadn't seen in decades, as well as other relatives.

Colorado. No sign, but a little bit of snow.

Utah.

Idaho.

Oregon.

It was a pretty full five and a half days for him!
