Here are the movies I watched this month, some with the kids and others with Tim. I'm not going to explain what each one is about, but you can click the titles for more info.
We Bought a Zoo
I read the book last month and finally got around to seeing the movie. The movie was fine, but it was nothing like the book at all. Well, other than a family buying a zoo.
STOMP Out Loud
I think the kids watched this four or five times in the week we had it from the library. Such a fun movie!
Food, Inc.
People have been talking about this movie for so long that I figured I should watch it.
UP!
We've seen it before, but the kids wanted to watch it again.
To Market, To Market: To Buy a Fat Pig
Just a random documentary I saw at the library about farmer's markets around the country. Watched it with the kids.
Glory Road
Tim checked this out and I didn't know anything about it, but I watched it with him while ordering curriculum one night. The true story of a 1966 college basketball team with several black players who came against all sorts of racism on their way to the National Championship game. Good flick.
Oregon Experience: Willam Gladstone Steel
A documentary about the man who is referred to as the father of Crater Lake National Park.
Eight Below
A group of sled dogs are left alone in Antarctica and have to fight for survival. The movie goes back and forth between the dogs and their owner, who had to leave them unexpectedly.
Planet B-Boy
This is a documentary about guys who breakdance competitively. Tim and I previewed it with the hope that the boys could watch it later, but a Vegas scene and a bunch of language means that's not going to happen right now. Actually, Silas had trouble falling asleep that night and watched the last part of it with us, but Devon's not going to watch it at all and Silas isn't going to see the whole thing. Bummer, because the guys are amazingly talented and I know our boys would have loved watching all their performances.
Princess Diaries
Movie night with the kids. They recognized Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and Maria (Sound of Music), so I was happy.
I'm the Queen "B" -- Wife of His Majes "T" -- Mom of four royally awesome kids: three princes and a princess.

SILAS' BIRTHDAY, PART TWO - 2012
The birthday boy, who hit the double digits this year, started his day off with a doughnut date with Tim. Jelly filled and covered in powdered sugar first, and a twist second.
We hung out at home for a bit after they returned from their tasty breakfast, all headed to the pool for a couple hours, then came back home for lunch. That's when he and I took off for Cold Stone together. He, as per usual, scarfed some strawberry blonde.
Next up was gifts from the other Ws and he broke out in a huge grin each time he opened something. Happy kid!

His birthday dinner of choice was Papa Murphy's, then the little Ws all watched a library movie. We wrapped up the day by taking the traditional birthday outfit pictures, though Silas hammed it up this year. These crack me up, especially the first one.

ANNIVERSARY DATE
We don't normally go out for our anniversary, but we did this year. The big boys had a church event two days after our anniversary. Then Naomi was invited to hang out with a friend during the boys' event. With 75% of our kids gone, we figured we should take advantage of the chance to go out for a bit. A friend offered to keep Tyler, so we had a couple kid-free hours.
First stop was Red Robin for some good food and overdue conversation. Second stop was Target for using a gift card to get Teebs some new jammies. Third stop was a mini trail in the middle of town and around the neighborhood on the opposite side of where we started walking. Fourth stop was Goodwill to kill a few minutes, but I ended up finding boots one of our boys needed.
Nothing glamorous, but it was nice to have some time alone.

I'm thankful for the crew of people who filled a gazillion water balloons yesterday and those who will spend a few hours getting wet with our church's grade schoolers today.

MENU - SECOND HALF OF JUNE 2012
Let's kick this post off with some new recipes we tried over the last few weeks, then I'll tell you what we're wrapping the month up with.
steak salad - I bought some pork steaks on clearance a while back and tossed them in the freezer. We're not "eat a slab of meat" kind of people and I wasn't sure what to do with them. I found a recipe for steak salad somewhere, but it seems I failed to bookmark the site and I can't find it anywhere. Guess I can't give credit where it's due. Oops. Anyway, this was a tasty salad.
dried beans - This isn't really a recipe, but it's the base for a gazillion other recipes. I've made a combo of seasoned black and pinto beans in the crockpot for several years, but never thought to cook all my dried beans in it. Kinda ridiculous when you consider I pre-cook and freeze all our beans and they never turn out right on the stove. So thankful a friend thought to branch out from the black and pinto beans after she tried them!
honey curried crockpot chickpeas - Easy peasy and tastes good.
green hummus - Maryanne uses this in grilled cheese sandwiches. It's a great way to get some extra protein and iron!
cream of celery soup - I wanted to use up my freezer stash of celery hearts and leaves, so I found this recipe and made it for lunch one day. Loved it!
BREAKFASTS
* fruit & doughnuts x2
* oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon, milk, raisins, hot cereal syrup, and energy mix as optional toppings x7
* leftover oatmeal pancakes
* baked oatmeal (prepped the previous night)
* cranberry granola

* quinoa patties/fruit & nut green salad #2
* black bean & rice burritos/green salad
* brown rice & lentil salad/toast
* Ranchero onion burgers (barbecue)/fries/carrots
* steak salad/whole wheat biscuits
SNACKS & DESSERTS
* popcorn
* produce
* celery & rosemary white bean dip

BIRTHDAYS, FATHER'S DAY, & SUMMER PROJECTS
My birthday - The kids and I had a great day at home! They all got along splendidly, I baked snickerdoodles with Devon (it was also his birthday and he wanted to take cookies to Bible study that night), we all watched a movie together, and just enjoyed each other's company. I got to take Devon to Cold Stone that evening, which was fun for me, even though it was technically for his birthday.
We have two double birthdays in our family and choose to focus the bulk of our attention on the birthday kid, not the parent, but I still had some birthday stuff for me. Tim gave me a cheesecake, which is one of my favorite desserts and something I very rarely get a chance to eat, and each kid ended up giving me cookies, which I also love. Two of the little Ws sent me on a scavenger hunt through the house and yard to find my gifts. We had Bible study that night and a few people dropped by the 1yo class we were working in to bring me birthday gifts or greetings, including a new "W" that I'll have to show you later.
There was one bummer, though. For the first time in my life, I didn't get a birthday card from Granny. She's pushing 90 and has become quite forgetful, so she must have simply forgotten to check her calendar. That's totally out of character for her and makes me kinda sad.
Anyway, it was a fun day and I'm thankful for that.
Boy birthdays - Silas and Devon had their joint birthday party on Saturday, which is always fun. Friends and family came over to celebrate and we had a great time. The kids played chicken (the balloon popping game) and wall ball, ate a ton of lunch, raided the berry patch, and decorated cupcakes. Our boys were showered with all sorts of fun and thoughtful gifts, the adults mingled with each other, and the sun was out for the entire party. Good times!
Father's Day - My dad, sister, and their families came to town for the boys' party. I have no idea when the last time was that I spent Father's Day with my dad and my sister never gets the opportunity, so she asked if we'd be willing to go to a later church service on Sunday so that we could all have breakfast together. It worked out for everyone, so 14 of us had breakfast together and gave cards to the dads before everyone headed home or to church. I didn't realize it until they were walking out the door, but that was our last time seeing my sister's family before they go back overseas, so I was extra glad it worked out to spend that morning together.
Summer - Today was the first weekday of Tim's summer vacation. There are so many things that need to get done around here, some because Tim's been gone a ton the last 6-7 weeks and I just can't keep up with everything on my own and some that have been waiting since we moved in over 8 months ago. So today was a work day and it was great to get some things taken care of. I love productivity!!
My goal is to have everything crossed off our list by the end of the weekend, but I'll be happy if most of it is. Especially the garage. It's been a disaster since we moved here. Tim and I have both worked there a few times on our own, but it had reached a point where we needed to work on it together to make sure the things we were organizing were going to work for each other. We spent a chunk of time working on it after the kids went to bed tonight and made a huge dent in it. One more evening and the job should be done.
The project I'm most looking forward to is painting the kitchen and dining area. Well, I'm looking forward to having it done, anyway. We'll do that in phases, though, and won't even start this week. I need the quicker projects out of the way first.
And that's a little glimpse of our last few days.

DEVON'S BIRTHDAY, PART TWO - 2012
The Dev-o-rama had a great day that included our regular birthday traditions and a little bonus fun thrown in the mix.
He and Tim headed out pretty early for their doughnut date. Jelly-filled was the birthday boy's choice this year.
We rolled 108 cookies, the little Ws and I each did quality control on one, and the bowl with the remaining 104 got set aside for church.
Later in the afternoon we took the traditional "birthday outfit" pictures.
Tim got home shortly after the photo shoot and we all sat down to Devon's birthday dinner. He requested fruit salad, fries, and Doritos this year. We almost always have tortilla chips in the house, but "fun" chips are generally a birthday treat. I'm just thankful he didn't ask for Cheetos. He did, however, insist on his "tough guy" face for this shot.
We scarfed down dinner, then he opened gifts from our family. Looks like he'll be keeping busy outside!
One last birthday tradition before the day came to an end. Cold Stone with me. He had coffee ice cream with Oreos and I had cherry vanilla with brownies (which, by the way, tastes a lot like Cherry Garcia). Our taste buds were happy!

He made sure to get every. last. drop. of the powdered sugar coating.
As soon as Devon realized his birthday was on the same day as Bible study, he asked if he could bring cookies to share with his class. It was fine with me, but he needed permission from the teacher. He shot off an e-mail asking if it would be ok and got thumbs up. He and I spent part of the morning making snickerdoodles, which are his favorite, to take to church.

We zipped back home to pick up the rest of the fam, headed off to Bible study with a bowl of cookies, and came home with an empty bowl that didn't even have a crumb left in it. I'd call that a pretty good birthday!
6/14/12 THANKFUL THURSDAY

MY BIRTHDAY
I turn 36 tomorrow and I've been unexpectedly weepy today.
It's sad to think my mom had no idea her 36th birthday would be her last cancer-free one. That her world was going to be rocked that year. That she'd be forced to question if she'd live long enough to raise her kids that turned 13, 11, and 8 that year. That she'd be forced to question how quickly "til death do us part" would come for her and my dad.
I realize her situation is not uncommon. In fact, I'm old enough now that several of my friends have faced the same situation in the last few years. Some are now healthy, others are battling the disease, and one has died. But standing at the edge of her diagnosis age is kinda weird. Life will be what it will be and I'll play the hand I'm dealt, but I really hope I get to see the little Ws become big Ws.
In other birthday news, I got a phone call from Tim today that made me smile.
Tim and I each share a birthday with one of the little Ws. Though both people get acknowledged on the birthday, we've chosen to make those days more about the kids than us. It's easy, though, for my birthday to just get completely lost in the shuffle of June madness at our house and I've had some birthdays that passed by without really being any different than other days.
We've also had years where Tim has surprised me with an outing of some sort. I've always appreciated the thought, but it inevitably throws a huge wrench in the rest of the day. Tim can't possibly know all the things I'm juggling in the course of a day or week, how I have things paced to work out right, etc. So it's really hard for me to completely enjoy whatever surprise he's suddenly put in my lap when I know it's going to mess up a gazillion other things. It's just stressful. So, last year I asked him not to surprise me anymore. I'd rather know what's coming so that I can plan accordingly, look forward to it, and enjoy whatever happens.
This year he asked me how I wanted my birthday celebrated. I thought about it for a day or two, then told him I wanted two things - to go on a family hike where I didn't have to plan or pack the lunches and to eat cheesecake. June is crazy and we probably won't get to the hike for another couple weeks, which is fine, but the phone call today was to ask me what kind of cheesecake I want. I'm happy.

GIRL TIME
Faith and Cheri invited me out to play for a little pre-birthday fun after church. Cold Stone (their first time, getting lost because the Cold Stone site gave wrong directions, a cash register that randomly thought it was 2016 and wouldn't take debit/credit cards that it thought had expired), a trip to the world's weirdest Ross, pillow shopping at Cascade Station (some ugly, some cute, and some that I'm not sure about yet), honkin' salads at Red Robin, some good conversations, and plenty of laughs later, I am home.
This week is going to be really busy and it was nice to just have some time to relax with a couple girlfriends before things kick into high gear. It wasn't the nap and productive time I'd planned for today, but it was a perfect afternoon and evening!

FIVE INCHES
Devon's been trying to figure out what to do next with his hair. He really likes having styles that require some length, but it's getting long enough to be a hassle with all the time he spends in the pool, yet isn't long enough to pull back in a rubberband when he's swimming. We've considered dreadlocks (not a good option during a summer spent in the pool), corn rows (too much time and money them to maintain), and just trimming the fro down a little. Today he decided to just whack it all off. It will be easier to maintain while he's swimming this summer and will have some length by the time fall rolls around.
The 5 inches of hair he used to have.
The 5 inches of hair he no longer has. Well, technically it's 4 1/2 inches we got rid of.
The silly, bald-ish boy. With a fading stamp on his forehead and crayon chunks in his teeth, because that's how he rolls.
The smiling, bald-ish boy.
He looks totally different, huh? The dude is looking quite grown up! And didn't that pile of hair look dark? Hard to believe he used to have platinum blonde hair.

6/7/12 THANKFUL THURSDAY
I'm thankful that our coin basket savings allowed us to pay for a "buy two sessions, get one free" special on swim lessons for the bigs. The second session ends today and I'm thankful that one kid has made enough progress to not need more lessons, two kids have made significant progress, and we've met a bunch of nice families.

GOOD LOOKS ARE OVERRATED
Here comes the ugly sister. ~ Silas
Disclaimer for those who think this post makes me a bad mom - Naomi was cracking up during the picture. We were all cracking up when Silas made his statement. None of us actually think Naomi's ugly. Naomi gave me permission to post this picture.

CHANGE IS IN THE AIR
We recently found out that Tim will not be returning to his current teaching position in the fall. Where will he be working? We don't know yet. He's obviously looking for teaching jobs, but, for the first time, he's also open to non-teaching options.
I'll be sure to update here when we have anything new to report. Meanwhile, let us know if you hear of any high school PE positions, share any brilliant ideas for non-teaching jobs (particularly ones with on-the-job training or minimal off-the-job training, as we're not interested in having him return to school), and pray for wisdom as we navigate this next season of life.

I LOVE OUR HOUSE #5
We were blessed to move into a house with beautiful landscaping and one of our favorite parts is the roses. Nine different kinds, ten different bushes. We've already cut a few dozen roses over the last few weeks to put in various rooms of our house. They're beautiful and smell amazing!

MENU - FIRST HALF OF JUNE 2012
It's June!!! Wowzers! We tried a few new recipes on the last menu and a couple of them were keepers.
brown rice lentil salad - This had a bite to it when I served it, but toned down a lot when I had leftovers the next day.
crockpot ziti - Pasta, multiple cheeses, spinach, and a crockpot. What's not to love? Some may find it a little bland as is, but it's easily perked up with pepperjack, crushed red pepper, or your favorite seasonings.
And now for what we'll be eating in the next couple weeks.

crockpot ziti - Pasta, multiple cheeses, spinach, and a crockpot. What's not to love? Some may find it a little bland as is, but it's easily perked up with pepperjack, crushed red pepper, or your favorite seasonings.
And now for what we'll be eating in the next couple weeks.
